| Exeter has some fantastic period open fires, either range style or cast iron insets. Not many have survived the passing fad to rip them out and install gas but you can still buy them from reclamation specialists or reproduction models. | |||
Sometimes a little TLC is required to keep them operating safely and efficiently. This ranges from simple reblacking to address rust issues through fire back (chair brick) repairs to backfilling. We often find cast iron inset fires that have a void behind them. Not only is this inefficient but also dangerous as debris falls and collects behind the metal that heats up and can catch fire. |

| Open fires require adequate ventilation and the calculations are set out in the Approved Document J. Rarely do we find sufficient provision meaning your fire will not operate at its most efficient. Using the latest core drilling equipment we can fit draft free ventilation unobtrusively in most homes. | |||
