Birds Nests
The UK has a number of birds who like to nest in chimneys. By far the most prevalent is the jackdaw. These birds are both persistent and predictable. You will often see them sitting by the warmth of a chimney pot, a sure indication they are nesting there or close by. Their breeding season is April to July. |
Jackdaws are persistent as they build their nests by simply dropping twigs down the chimney until they lodge and then they continue to build on the obstruction they have created. This can be towards the top of the chimney or, if you are unlucky, much further down the flue, perhaps on a bend. They are predictable as they like to nest in the same chimney year after year. Some 'nests' are like concrete after years of use. |
Nests obviously block the free passage of smoke or gasses up the chimney, particularly dangerous with gas appliances. They can catch fire very easily as they become tinder dry. Finally they can cause dust and spread disease and cause damp. Quite simply they should be removed professionally as soon as they are discovered. We are pleased to offer the latest power sweeping option to assist in removing even the most stubborn and extensive nests. |
