Putting An Fireplace Back Into Use

With the cost of gas, oil and electricity forever rising solid fuel is now a cheaper convenient alternative. As a result more and more people are calling us for advise around either putting an old fire back into use or changing from gas to solid fuel. This page should help if you are one of these people.
There is guidance provided in the Approved Document that supports building regulations (ADJ as it is known) which makes it clear what the steps are to help ensure the existing flue is safe to use. The 3 steps are all followed by Exeter Chimney Sweeps and the extracts of the document are included as a link here to save replicating them.
Click the image to be taken to the PDF file extract which explains the steps to be followed. They should make absolute sense in terms of Clean, Inspect and Test. There may be some additional work necessary, the most common of which is professionally back filling a cast fire insert to ensure a fire proof environment. A site visit will identify what is needed for you to get a flue back into use.
If we discover any issues for your consideration we will produce a report as part of our work for you.
Finally we provide a number of other associated services including re-blacking, installing new fire backs (chair bricks) and constructing new fire bricks for cast iron fires and stoves. Some examples of our work can be found in the repairs section of this website.
